Dinner is about to be served and all are welcomed at this table.
This subject is a sensitive topic to many of my friends but one I feel that this is a topic that must be addressed.
I have been reading about the Dolphin Drives in Taiji, Japan. Every year, the fishermen of Taiji, drive hundreds of dolphins into a cove...select some for sale to Marine parks...release some and kill the rest for meat.
I read this next portion from
CNN News: Defending the Traditions...
Although the hunting of dolphins is widely condemned in the West, many in Japan defend the practice as a local custom -- and say it is no different to the slaughter of other animals for meat.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters at a news conference Monday that marine mammals including dolphins were "very important water resources."
"Dolphin fishing is one of traditional fishing forms of our country and is carried out appropriately in accordance with the law. Dolphin is not covered by the International Whaling Commission control and it's controlled under responsibility of each country."
Taiji mayor Kazutaka Sangen echoed the sentiments.
"We have fishermen in our community and they are exercising their fishing rights," he said. "We feel that we need to protect our residents against the criticisms."
The part that bothered me the most was this sentence "it is no different to the slaughter of other animals for meat."
Which leads me to ask the question, are we being hypocrites?
Look at the way we slaughter and treat animals in our own country? Isn't that the Pot calling the Kettle black?
What is the difference between a dolphin, whale, chicken or pig? To be honest with you...NONE. They should all be respected and treated humanely.
Another few words that bothered me "select some for sale to Marine parks"....which goes to show me that there is a demand for them. Where is the demand coming from? Us. Many of us go to the marine parks and pay alot of money to see them. Trainers go to Taiji to hand pick the dolphins for their marine parks for us to see which indicates to me that we are part of the problem.
We go to the circus to see the elephants and the big cats perform for us.
We know that they are not performing for us but forced yet we pay our hard earned money to go see it.
The question that I am asking is what we can do about this problem?
Are traditions really the reason that all of this is happening? Are there any other solutions that we can offer to help not just the dolphins but other animals as well?
