A PLEA FOR THE ELDERLY OR INFIRMED ON EARTH
(Yes I played with stuffed animals, loved even more to play with real ones, played with cars and trucks more than dolls though, Feeling Joyful. Nursed the farm animals when they were sick, gave them burial ceremonies when they transcended, putting wildflowers on their graves. Played out in the woods with the wild critters, they were all my friends. But back to the main topic.)
I have always had a special place in my heart for the old folks. They seemed so very wise and learned. They always had amazing stories to tell, so I was an avid listener to everything they said. My mother used to try and shoo me away for I wasn't supposed to eavesdrop on the grownup conversations. But I couldn't help myself.
I loved their wrinkled faces that bespoke of many hardships as well as many joys to me. Laugh lines, sun lines, wind lines, soft or raspy voices, their beautiful faces shone with volumes of different experiences I knew they had lived. I wanted to hear all about them and to learn all I could. I knew they were the ones to pay attention to for the children didn't know what adults did of course, or so I thought at the time. Now I know I have much to learn from the children as well, but that's another story.
As I got older I went into care giving for them. I worked in both private and professional situations off and on.
I got my first aid and CPR certification and I worked one job in a licensed care facility twenty-four hours a day 3-4 days a week. I took care of six older ladies all by myself. I was in my early twenties.
I cooked according to the menu the owner/operator had come up with, three times a day, passing medications, charting, changing bedding, giving baths, helping them dress, even cutting their hair sometimes and more personal things though I will leave them their dignity here and say no more. I tried to entertain them by bringing my hamster with me or bringing something special to eat from home that they usually didn't get there. I would play games with them and make them laugh.
I remember one day that one of my ladies had a stroke. I had just taken a look at her then went into the other room for a few minutes, came back and half of her face had drooped. I immediately called the owner of the facility, who was next door at one of his other homes run for the elderly. His name was Carl.
He began getting her records together. I asked him why he wasn't calling 911 first? He said he had to get all their papers together first. I said if you do not call them right now, then I'm going to, for you can get their papers together while the ambulance is on their way here. You should not be wasting time.
He ignored me, so I called them immediately. I didn't care what this man had to say about it and I probably should have called them myself before calling my boss. I had never been in this situation before though.
I didn't work for this place very long because I had it shut down. The owner and his wife were walking around in furs with obscene diamond rings on their fingers, whilst these elderly women were two to a room, having their entire social security checks taken from them and in many cases more on top of that from their families. Eating the same menu every week, nothing special, only the cheapest food money can buy. It was criminal to me and I turned them in. I couldn't care less about my job. There are a million of those to be had just like it too.
I no longer work for the professional health care system, but I still do private care on the side as well as housecleaning for the elderly in between my duties here at The Third Testament, studying, researching, and teaching online when I have the time.
They are so precious to me. I take care of them as I do myself or would my own parents, if they were still here anyway.
Today I went and visited for the second time, and elderly man who lost his wife of many years to Alzheimer's. He was so happy to have company it breaks my heart and I am overcome by my compassion. How can I not serve or go the extra mile when there are such needs that I can assist with in this world? It only takes a few hours a week to bring the sunshine into their homes and cheer them up! To make their day a little happier.
There are so many shut ins and older folks that can no longer keep up their yards or homes by themselves, so I only charge $10 an hour for cleaning and call the rest charity since I always give more than what I receive in recompense. I still have my own bills to pay as well and they have their dignity to preserve. Most of them don't like to not pay you something.
They are so lonely and just chatting with them for an hour or two to see how they are doing means the world to them. It lets them know there are people in this world who truly care about them and don't just want something from them. So many of them I see being taken advantage of, many times by their own children and other family members. So much abuse and so very appalling.
Are we not to visit the old and infirmed? The incarcerated? To take care of the widows, widowers and orphans?
Put yourself in their place and how would you have other humans treat you if you were in their shoes? You soon may be.
How would you want your own mother or father treated? Your own child if you transcended and could not be there for them anymore? For we all shall get old and we all suffer infirmities from time to time.
Please make time or consider helping them. Open doors for them, carry their groceries, take out their garbage, mow their lawns, trim the hedges, water their shrubs, bring them something to eat now and then or more often if you are able to.
I get such joy from doing this, the reward is double and it is a win-win situation which could be yours as well.
God Bless the elderly and those who are there for them.
AMEN"
