Sea Life and the Beached Whale

In 2012, there have been many beached whales come to Me in Spirit.

In late January, ninety-nine Pilot whales came to shore, in Wellington, New Zealand and all efforts to get them back to sea seemed hopeless, when they kept coming back to shore. The volunteers and scientists helplessly watched as many died. Yet, even though thirty six died a natural death on the beach, seventeen were able to be re-floated. Experts chose to euthanize the remaining thirty-three who lay there suffering in confusion. The count is high, and this is not an unusual case.

Yesterday, a lone sperm whale measuring 13 meters, (43 feet) came to shore and was beached in Heist, along the Belgium coast, near Sea Life, a sanctuary and research facility for injured seals, and many sea creatures. Scientists from Sea Life, were called in to assist, and give opinion.

Many scientists, tourists and residents arrived to brave the sub zero weather, to help and view the whale. Unfortunately, some of those other than the officials, saw this as a circus, instead of the seriousness of the situation. One child was asked what he thought, and he replied. 'It is cool!'
'It is not cool, this serious."

Jan Haelters of the Natural Science Institute shared with reporters, the dangers of the North Sea for sperm whales; it is not deep enough. They believe the whale, made a wrong turn, and lost the way along the traditional migration route, which would have normally taken this whale towards England.
These whales, when lost, can run aground, sometimes receiving injuries which make it impossible for those helping to save them.

What is more sad, is that the highly intelligent whale, is a victim of those who are greedy for their body parts. A local police officer guarded the whale over night, to make certain the body would not be pillaged. Even a whale's tooth, brings a high price on the market, around a thousand dollars.
Later, parts would be taken by the universities for further study.

The sperm whale died before experts could do any medical intervention. This saddens many who love the whales, and the marine specialists, Doctors who specialize in the mammals of the sea.
They claim, these whales have lost their way in confusion, with their sonar being disrupted by various signals coming from ships. The world's ocean's are extremely crowded with fishing vessels, as well as transport and cruise ships. The Sperm Whale, came to shore, not far from Zee Brugge, a place well known for heavy shipping traffic. Shipping noise causes chronic stress to whales, scientists have shown for the first time, after using the halt in marine traffic after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 to conduct an experiment.

The effect on whales of propeller noise, military sonar and explosions set off in the search for oil and gas is controversial. Environmental campaigners claim the noise interferes with the singing of whales or even kills the animals, and are suing the United States government over the navy's use of sonar.

The research, published yesterday, provides the first evidence of physical harm, according to Dr Rosalind Rolland, a researcher at the New England Aquarium in the US.

"We showed whales occupying oceans with high levels of ship noise have a chronic stress response," said Dr Rolland, who led the study. "We knew whales changed the frequency of their calls to adapt to the ship noise, but this work shows it is not merely an annoyance - it is having a physical effect."
