The Tree At Summer Camp-Lightning Warnings

I love wind storms and lightning; they are so beautiful. This reminds me of when You were with me when I was 8 years old. I had not thought of it until I read this.

My parents had sent me to a youth camp for a month where I did all kind of activities, swimming, sailing, caning etc. One day we were outside far from any shelter and the clouds started to gather and lightning was everywhere. The instructor of the camp told us to go under an old old big tree, few centuries old.

As the other kids walked toward the tree, I heard 'do not go there it is dangerous,' so I told the instructor, 'lightning will strike the tree, I am staying on the open field.'

Lightning was now closer; electricity was everywhere. The instructor argued with me it was safe; as I stood my ground in the storm, the instructor slapped me across the face, to tell me to move under the tree! As he slapped me. I still said 'I'm not going; it is not safe.'

The other kids stopped in their way and came back towards me. The instructor yelled and was going to slap me again for my unruly behavior.

Lightning struck the tree which split in half; the look on the instructor's face was priceless.

As we were all standing now on the open away from all the trees, I told the instructor, 'If we had been under that tree some of us would have been dead and for your lack of judgment and slapping me when I get home, I will have you fired.'

The instructor did not apologize and continued to act as a raving lunatic. When I went home, I told my parents what had happened which caused the camp to be investigated. My story was collaborated by all the other kids and the man was fired from his job.

Few years back as I was in Colorado with my kids, lightning again was all over the area, so beautiful, I heard Angel Michael saying;

'Muriel gather your kids get in the minivan and drive.'

I did exactly that. As I started to drive, lightning hit the roof of my mini van. I continue to drive. When I arrive home, I noticed the top of the vans roof was black and had been burned to some extent. Lightning to me and wind is very beautiful, but I have learned how to respect its power.
